Trivial Facts

The series premiered on September 17, 1972 and ended February 28, 1983, with the finale becoming the most-watched television episode to this day.
The external shots were filmed at the Fox Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains area of California. In 1974, the State of California purchased the ranch and renamed it Malibu Creek State Park. The park was opened to the public in 1976. Afterwards, the Fox Studios didn't have easy access to it, therefore episodes in the later seasons contain very few external shots.
The filming of internal shots (inside buildings and selected close-up shots of outside areas such as the compound) was done on stage #9 of the 20th Century Fox Studios in Hollywood, California.
"Suicide is Painless" music was written by Johnny Mandel and lyrics written by Mike Altman first released in 1970
After "The Pilot", the last two notes in the theme music were dropped and another note added.
The last note in the theme music was dropped beginning in Season 5

Gary Burghoff, G. Wood, and Timothy Brown were the only three actors to appear in both the original M*A*S*H movie and the series.

Wayne Rogers left because he felt that the part of Trapper was getting smaller and the character wasn't developing.
McLean Stevenson left because he felt his part as Henry was playing second fiddle to the wisecracking Hawkeye and asked to be let out of his contract during the show's third season hoping to be a big star on a rival network.
Larry Linville left because he had grown tired of playing the same negative cartoonish antagonist, especially since his character's partner, 'Hot Lips' Houlihan, was no longer on his side and decided to leave the series so that he could pursue other more challenging roles.
Gary Burghoff left because he had wanted to devote most of his time to his family, rather than the show.
Gary Burgoff had the wart on his forehead removed before season 4.
Jamie Farr was added as a co-star in the beginning of Season 4
William Christopher was added as a co-star in the beginning of Season 5
